The History
The Chiado Palace in Lisbon, Portugal has a rich and fascinating history that spans over several centuries. Originally built in the late 16th century, the palace served as the residence of the esteemed noble family of the Marquises of Pombal. It was designed in the Mannerist architectural style, which was typical of the era, and featured ornate decorations and intricate detailing.
Throughout its history, the Chiado Palace witnessed many important events and developments in Portuguese history. One of the most notable events was the devastating earthquake of 1755, which caused significant damage to the palace and the surrounding area. However, the palace was restored and rebuilt in the following years, showcasing the resilience and determination of the people of Lisbon.
Chiado Palace was beautifully restored in 2016 and the former home of Baron Quintela opened to the public as an elegant fine dining hotel.
The restoration works took more then one and a half years to complete. The historic rooms nowadays host alternatives for fine dining and other forms of entertainment for Lisbon residents and visitors. The palace also has a varied cultural program.
Today, the Chiado Palace stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of Lisbon. It has been restored and preserved as a historic landmark, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire its stunning architecture and learn about its fascinating past. It stands as a symbol of the city’s rich heritage and serves as a landmark that connects the past with the present, making it an important and cherished part of Lisbon’s history.

Why Chiado?
Chiado is an elegant metropolis of shops, cafes, book stores, restaurants, museums and bars.
Most of the buildings in the area date back to the 1700s but this neighbourhood will transport you back to the romantic times of the Belle Epoque. When in the 19th and early 20th century Fernando Pessoa (Portuguese Hemingway of sorts) was penning some of his greatest poetry at the now historic art deco style cafe, Brasileira.
The Chiado district of Lisbon is a vibrant and historic neighborhood. The architecture in Chiado is striking, featuring beautiful 18th-century buildings that were mostly rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1988. This rebuilding effort has resulted in a unique blend of traditional Portuguese design with modern amenities, making it one of Lisbon’s most sought-after areas to live and visit.
From the bustling nightlife on Rua Garrett to the cultural institutions like the National Theater of Sao Carlos, Chiado offers something for everyone. Its central location near other popular neighborhoods like Bairro Alto and Baixa also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring all that Lisbon has to offer.
